Kelly Fehr: Experienced Leadership and Community Advocacy

For more than two decades, I have held leadership roles overseeing budgets, strategic planning, governance, housing initiatives, and community services throughout British Columbia. Since being elected to Vernon City Council in 2018, I have leveraged my extensive experience to enhance community advocacy in Vernon, guiding decisions on affordable housing, infrastructure, recreation, transportation, financial stewardship, and long-term planning. My goal has always been simple: to make decisions that are fair, responsible, and in the best interests of the entire community, reflecting the principles of leadership.

In addition to my work on Vernon City Council, I have had the pleasure of representing residents through several city-appointed committees, including the Finance Committee, Joint Biosolids Advisory Committee, Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, Vernon Seniors Action Network, Okanagan College - Regional Advisory Committee, Downtown Vernon Association Liaison, and the Municipal Insurance Association of BC. These roles exemplify community advocacy in Vernon and allow me to collaborate closely with community stakeholders to find effective solutions to local and regional challenges affecting education, infrastructure, transportation, the environment, and economic development, all while demonstrating leadership in striving for better affordable housing in Vernon.

Municipal challenges rarely stop at municipal boundaries. In addition to serving on Vernon City Council, I have represented residents through my work with: Regional District of North Okanagan Board, RDNO - Greater Vernon Advisory Committee, RDNO - Finance Committee, North Okanagan-Columbia Shuswap Regional Hospital Board, and Okanagan Film Commission Board. These roles strengthen my community advocacy in Vernon, ensuring we have a strong voice in regional decisions that impact healthcare, infrastructure, and affordable housing in Vernon, as well as transportation, water, the environment, and economic development.

I hold a Graduate Diploma in Management and am currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA), which is enhancing my expertise in strategic management, organizational leadership, and governance. My commitment to community advocacy in Vernon is also reflected in my career choices. 

Outside of the Council, I have dedicated my professional life to the construction and site development, as well as the health sectors, and I have spent the past 18 years in leadership positions within the non-profit sector. My experiences have fueled my passion for affordable housing in Vernon, which I believe is crucial for sustainable community development.

My professional background encompasses governance, strategic planning, financial management, asset management, housing, community development, and social services. These experiences have provided me with practical skills in managing budgets, forging partnerships, tackling complex challenges, and leading organizations through significant changes, all of which are essential aspects of effective leadership. 

These experiences continue to inform my approach to public service and community leadership.

Every decision I make is guided by three core principles.

Fairness

Local government thrives when every resident feels represented. My responsibility is to ensure that the voices of all community members are heard, not just those of the most organized groups. This commitment extends to addressing critical issues such as affordable housing in Vernon, where every resident deserves a voice in the discussion.

Fiscal Responsibility

Residents work hard for their money and rightfully expect the Council to manage public resources judiciously. I believe in responsible budgeting and strategic investments that ensure taxpayers receive value from every dollar spent. This fiscal discipline is essential to support initiatives like community advocacy in Vernon, which aims to uplift and empower local voices.

Evidence-Based Decision Making

Complex issues require thoughtful solutions. I believe that decision-making should be anchored in facts, expert advice, community input, and long-term planning. It is crucial to move beyond assumptions and political rhetoric, focusing instead on informed choices that benefit the entire community.

Throughout my time on Council, I have been dedicated to advancing initiatives that ensure Vernon's long-term success, particularly in areas like affordable housing in Vernon, recreation, transportation, climate resilience, and regional partnerships.

The Official Community Plan, Housing Action Plan, Active Living Centre, and active transportation initiatives are all part of this vision. 

These accomplishments highlight the collaborative efforts of Council, staff, community organizations, and residents in community advocacy in Vernon, all working together to achieve our common goals.
